High School Hosts ‘Adulting Day’ To Teach Kids How To Cook, Pay Bills

A high school in Kentucky wants to ensure that when the class of 2019 graduates they have learned a few essential life skills. To ensure that the seniors are ready for the "real world," Bullitt Central High School hosted an "Adulting Day" where students were able to learn about basic finances and how to cook a meal.

The event was organized by Christy Hardin, the director of the Bullitt Central High School Family Resource & Youth Services Center, who said she got the idea while scrolling through Facebook.

“I think that the idea occurred to me originally, I saw a Facebook post that parents passed around saying they needed a class in high school on taxes, and cooking,” Hardin told WAVE. “Our kids can get that, but they have to choose it. And (Wednesday) was a day they could pick and choose pieces they didn’t feel like they had gotten so far."

During the event, students got to have one-on-one meetings with members of the community where they learned how to change a tire, pay their bills, and put together a budget. There were also guest speakers from the Shepherdsville Police Department, the Army, and a local church.
